Assault Weapon Ban Going Bye-Bye

(AP) The federal ban on assault weapons that has been in effect for 10 years is scheduled to expire in September, 2004.

That's just 40 days away, kids, just in time for duck hunting season. Or is it wabbit season?

Let's see which congressmen stick around or delay their summer vacations to stand up to the NRA and keep the ban alive.

Without commenting on the relative merits, there is zero, zero chance of the ban not sunsetting.

An amusing factoid- "Pre-ban", grandfathered in assault weapons have commanded enormous prices from collectors and shooting enthusiasts, since if they weren't made before 1994, they can't have the "cool" cosmetic features of the "banned" weapons. So lots of guys have stocked up on these to sell, and have been doing so for some time.

When the ban sunsets, these guys are going to be sitting on alot of guns they paid way too much for that are available in the exact same configuration legally and brand spanky new out of the box.
